Position Overview:
BLN24 has an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Technical Writer/Editor to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (NOAA). Serving as a trusted scientific communications and editorial resource, this individual translates complex research, program accomplishments, and technology innovations into compelling, audience-appropriate communications products. Working closely with NOAA leadership, researchers, scientists, program managers, and stakeholders, the ideal candidate combines exceptional writing and editing skills, scientific literacy, and strategic communications expertise to communicate NOAA's research outcomes to policymakers, Congress, the weather enterprise, and the public.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and edit win stories, impact narratives, technical reports, white papers, briefing materials, fact sheets, presentations, web content, and stakeholder-facing products that showcase NOAA-funded research, scientific achievements, and program outcomes.
Translate complex scientific, technical, and operational information into clear, accurate, and engaging content for both technical and non-technical audiences, including Congressional briefings, leadership communications, budget justifications, and strategic plans.
Conduct interviews with researchers, Principal Investigators, program managers, and stakeholders to gather information and develop impactful communications products aligned with AP style and NOAA editorial standards.
Support website, social media, newsletter, and digital communications activities, and coordinate document reviews, version control, and publication schedules to promote NOAA programs, partnerships, and research impacts.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Science Communication, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Meteorology, Public Policy, or related discipline,
Minimum six (6) years of professional experience in technical writing, scientific communications, journalism, public affairs, or strategic communications.
Demonstrated experience developing win stories, impact narratives, executive communications, or stakeholder-facing products, including application of AP style and professional editorial standards.
Experience translating complex scientific or technical information into accessible content for diverse audiences, including preparation of technical reports, briefing materials, web content, and strategic communications deliverables.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and review cycles simultaneously.
Ability to obtain and maintain required NOAA facility, security, and IT access.
